September 11,2001 <br /> <br />139 <br /> <br />Map of the City of Martinsville, located at 1009 Fayette Street, is <br />hereby rezoned from R-9 Residential to C-lA Commercial. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED by said Council that, an emergency <br />existing, this ordinance shall be in force immediately upon adoption. <br /> <br />Council considered adoption of a Resolution supporting the development of a <br /> <br />Regional Governor's School for the Counties of Henry, Patrick, and Pittsylvania, and the <br /> <br />Cities of Martinsville and Danville. Ira Trollinger, Superintendent, stated that this area is <br /> <br />one of few communities not served by a Governor's School. Lynn Ward, School Board <br />member, was recognized. Vice Mayor Teague moved to adopt the following Resolution; <br /> <br />the motion was duly seconded and carried by the following vote, with all members <br /> <br />present voting: Vote 4 - 0; Yeas (4) - Crabtree, Ferrill, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - <br /> <br />None: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Martinsville City School System has actively <br />participated in the feasibility study for the planning and <br />development of the Piedmont Governor's School for Mathematics, <br />Science and Technology for the jurisdictions of the Counties of <br />Henry, Patrick and Pittsylvania and the Cities of Martinsville and <br />Danville; and <br />WHEREAS, the Martinsville City School Board recognizes the need <br />for an academic year Regional Governor's School for high- <br />achieving, highly-motivated, and academically-gifted students; and <br />WHEREAS, after review and consideration of the resultant <br />feasibility study, it has been formally accepted by the Martinsville <br />City School Board; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville realizes a Regional Governor's <br />School would complement the Community's efforts to recruit <br />incoming businesses and families to our area; and <br />WHEREAS, pending final review, approval and appropriation of <br />funds by the Virginia Board of Education and the Virginia General <br />Assembly, the Martinsville City School Board plans to participate in <br />the program commencing with the 2002 School Year as a member <br />of the Governing Board; now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, in regular session assembled September 11, 2001, that it <br />does fully support the Piedmont Governor's School program and <br />urges the Virginia Board of Education and the Virginia General <br /> <br /> <br />
