June 11,2001 <br /> <br /> A work session meeting to review the Fiscal Year 2001-2002 Proposed Budget of <br />the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, was held on June 11, 2001, in Council <br />Chamber of the Municipal Building, beginning at 7:32 P. M., with Mayor Mark Crabtree <br />presiding. Council Members present included: Mark A. Crabtree, Mayor; M. Gene <br />Teague, Vice Mayor; and Council Members Bruce H. T. Dallas and J. Ronald Ferrill. <br />Council Member Terry L. Roop was absent due to illness. <br /> <br /> Regarding the use of Hooker Field by Martinsville High School (MHS) and the <br />American Legion League, Earl B. Reynolds, Jr., City Manager, presented a historical <br />review of Hooker Field and the developments with Hooker FUrniture Corporation, the <br />Philadelphia Phillies, and the Houston Astros. He presented, also, the following: <br />schedule of 2001 play; results of surveys of professional teams and other fields with <br />American Legion teams; and cost allocations and a comparative analysis of games and <br />p'ractic~es "fbi~ the" Asti~oS, MHS, and the American Legion. Vice Mayor Teague <br />suggested that the American Legion concessions may help offset the expenses and the <br />School System may help with some of the costs but if either group was unable to do so, <br />it would be acceptable. Council Member Dallas voiced his concern that Leisure <br />Services should maintain Hooker Field without any extra money: He stated, also, .that <br />the School System does not charge the City for use of its facilities. Bill Freeland, of <br />1908 Dundee Lane, questioned why the costs are different between the Southside fields <br />and Hooker Field. City Manager Reynolds replied that Hooker Field requires more due <br />to professional standards. Barry Wyatt, of 916 Vine Street, stated that whatever the <br />costs, the taxpayers are paying for it. Ricky Martin, of 1203 Valleyview Road, stated <br />that the number of baseball team players is increasing and that a lot of renovation <br /> <br /> <br />
