February 13, 2001

A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville,
Virginia, was held on February 13, 2001, in Council Chamber of the Municipal Building,
beginning at 7:30 P. M., with Mayor Mark Crabtree presiding. Council Members present
included: Mark A. Crabtree, Mayor; M. Gene Teague, Vice Mayor; and Council
Members Bruce H. T. Dallas, J. Ronald Ferrill, and Terry L. Roop.

Following the invocation by Vice Mayor Teague, Mayor Crabtree welcomed
everyone to the meeting.

Council considered and deferred approval of the Minutes of January 23, 2001.
Council considered business from the floor. Barry Wyatt stated, "1 understand
that the Madinsville High School Baseball Team was notifiedI this week 'that Hooker
Field will not be available for its practices or games. I don't understand, as a taxpayer,
why it's not available." Earl B. Reynolds, Jr., City Manager, replied, "1 spoke with the
principal today and assured him that we will do everything we can to complete the
dugout project before the field's needed. Council policy is still intact." Council Member
Roop stated, "This is the third year of controversy regarding practices and games. I
think that the use of the field is a tremendous incentive, and we should resolve this
issue once and for all." Council Member Dallas added, "As far as I'm concerned,
Martinsville High School comes first with Hooker Field." Harry Varn, President of the
Martinsville Community Recreation Association, stated, "Over 500 young people
participated in tfi~r~;~nt i~i'cR l-I~enry Basketball Class Tournament. The Association
has been in existence for over 30 years and is dedicated to the youth of our community.
We would like to present $5,000 for the dugout project."
