The amended main motion <br /> <br />was carried by the following vote, .with all members voting: Vote 5 - 0; Yeas (5) - <br /> <br />Crabtree, Dallas, Ferrill, Roop, Teague; Nays' (0)--None.~ ~:.~ <br /> <br />Council considered adoption of a Resolution to support the development of a <br /> <br />Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail in Virginia. Bonnie Greenwalt, Director of Tourism, <br /> <br />stated, "This would be located between Interstate 81 and U. S: Highway 29. There's no <br /> <br />money involved and no way to lose." Jim Beard, of the Virginia Museum of Natural <br /> <br />History, added, "This project is primarily wildlife watching for a fairly specific audience." <br /> <br />Council Member Dallas moved to adopt the following Resolution; the motion was duly <br /> <br />seconded and carried by thefollowing vote, with all members voting: Vote 5- 0; Yeas. <br /> <br />(5) - Crabtree, Dallas, Ferrill, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - None: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, 'the City of Martinsville has received information that <br />the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, hereafter <br />referred to as '"DGIF," has 'set a goal of obtaining TEA-21 <br />(transportation enhancement) funding for the purpose of creating <br />the Virginia Birding & Wildlife Trail; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville has identified ecotourim as a <br />priority in their 'tourism development program and it appears that <br />the Virginia Birding & Wildlife Trail would strongly complement their <br />ecotourism initiatives and enhance local economic development; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, bird watching and nature-tourism are rapidly-growing <br />components of the tourism industry, attracting more than two million <br />individuals annually to existing Virginia sites and generating nearly <br />$700 million annually; and <br />WHEREAS~ the Virginia Birding & Wildlife Trail is intended to unify <br />existing and potential wildlife watching sites into a single, cohesive, <br />marketing entity; and <br />WHEREAS, the proposed Birding & Wildlife Trail will be a driving <br />trail using Virginia's existing highway system to link some of <br />Virginia's best wildlife watching sites providing recreational <br /> <br /> <br />
