-, Enclosure #1

Martinsville
A CITY WITHOUT LIMITS

MEMORANDUM

TO: The Honorable Mayor Mark A. Crabtree & Members of City Council
FROM: Wayne D. P. ~ox, Planning / Zoning & Housing Manager

DATE: October 23, 2000

RE: Proposed Zoning Ordinance amendment - Real Estate signs

Following your August 2000 public heating, City Council tabled the recommendation
and requested the Planning Commission to further review the proposed changes and get
more input from local real estate agents. At its October 3, 2000 meeting, the Planning
Commission, unanimously approved a motion to resubmit the original amendment to City
Council for its consideration and resolution. Further, additional requests for input from
the local real estate community is being sought for the sake of fairness and
understanding.

It was the intent of the Planning Commission to recommend an amendment that is more
restrictive to ensure that the size of real estate signage would be better controlled, and
reduce the amount of signage that contributes to visual pollution on our main
thoroughfares. It was also the desire to have this amendment be enforced across all
zoning districts.

Lastly, members of the Planning Commission will be available at the October 30, 2000
meeting of City Council to answer any questions you may have.

55 West Church Street P.O.
