<br />156 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />MAY 2,8 ~ 1957 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthJy meeting of the Council of the C i41 of Martinsvi lle , <br />Virginia, with Mayor John W. Shultz presiding, was held in the Coureil Chanber, <br />City Hall, on Tuesday, May 28, 1957, at 7:30 P.M., the followi~ members bei~ <br />present: Mayer am Councilman John W. Shultz; Vice-Mayor and Councilman E. E. <br />Stone; and Councilmen B. H. Hill and C. C. Donavant. Coureilman J. R. Walker <br />was absent because of illness. <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as read the minutes of its regular meeti~ <br />held May 14, 1957 and of its special meeting held .Ma.Y 20, 1951. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged the presence of maqr visitors, among whom were groups of <br />local public school government class students. <br /> <br />At City Manager ~Hirst's request, Council continued the matter of requested <br />financial assistance by the Martinsville-Henry County Life Saving Crew, as <br />received on May 14, 1957. <br /> <br />City Manager Hirst called Council's attention to the facts (1) that Burroughs- <br />White Chevrolet Corporation, which for several years and under an agreement with <br />the City has been furnishing free to the City a Chevrolet passenger car for use <br />by the Fire Chief in line of duty, has notified the City that th.e agreement will <br />be terminated and (2) that some objection has developed to the proposed install- <br />ation of new street lights on Gratton Road and Prospect Hill Drive. <br /> <br />Mayor Shultz, Councilman Donavant, and City Manager Hirst reported on their May <br /> <br />27th appearance before the state Water Control Board during which they presented <br /> <br />a resume of theCityls efforts over the years towards the construction of a <br /> <br />sewage disposal plant and sewage collector lines. <br />
