<br />41' <br /> <br />FRIDAY <br /> <br />FEBRUARY 2. 1962 <br /> <br />A snedal and duly-called meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Eayor J. Frank Wilson prcs::1.ding, was held in the Coundl Chanber, <br /> <br />City Hall, Friday, Febrtk'1.r:r 2, 1962, at 5:00 P.N., for the purpose of determining <br /> <br />the extent, if any, to which the City might participate in the founding and <br /> <br />oDeration of a two-year college in Hartinsville. All members of Council were <br /> <br />present, v:i.z., l/ayor J. Frank Wilson; Vice-J'layor Fred T. Renick; Thomas J. <br /> <br />Burch; E. E. Stone; and Harry L. Boaz. <br /> <br />1'- <br /> <br />After the invocation and after the stating of the purpose of this special meeting, <br /> <br />Council received from Mr. 1. M. Groves, Sr., Presic1 ent of the Piedmont Trust Bank <br /> <br />and a member of a cormni ttee from the lvhrtinsville Jrea Chamber of Commerce which <br /> <br />has been investigating the possibilities of establishing a two-year community <br /> <br />college, some rockground information vThich has led to assurance that the University <br /> <br />of Virginia will operate the proposed college and the Virginia General Assembly will <br /> <br />aDpropriate fnnds therefor if the sum of $30,500.00 \-Till be approprinted by local <br /> <br />area governing bodies to renovate the City's North l'b.rtinsville Elementary School <br /> <br />building suitably to house the nev, college for opening in September of 1962. Upon <br /> <br />motion by COunCilITE.ll Burch, seconded by Councilman Renick, Council unanimously <br /> <br />guarar:.teed to underv1!'ite one-half of the ~30, 500.00 share r!~0uired of the local area <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />governini" bodies, or ~15, 250.00, assumine: that the HeY'.ry County Board of Supervisors <br /> <br />will do likewise, and with the understanding that if Patrick County agrees to share a <br /> <br />portion of this cost the Gity of Martinsville's share wiD be reduced by one-half of <br /> <br />Patdck County's contribution. <br /> <br />COlmCn was adjourned. <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />) <br />c~l")4lv:\...L""'~ <br />W.
