<br />Jj <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />FEBRUARY 24, 1970 <br /> <br />,,- <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D., presiding, was held Tuesday, <br /> <br />February 24, 1970, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., <br /> <br />all members being present excepting Councilman William D. Hobson (who was <br /> <br />out of town), viz., Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D.; Vice-Mayor Francis T. West; <br /> <br />Harry L. Boaz; and W. Donald Hartford. <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as recorded the minutes of its regular <br /> <br />meeting held February 10, 1970. <br /> <br />For the purpose of recording in these minutes the fact that, on the morning of <br /> <br />February 19th, the National Municipal League and LOOK Magazine jointly <br /> <br />announced the designation of the City of Martinsville, along with ten other <br /> <br />cities within the United States, as being an "All-America City" for 1970, Council <br /> <br />acknowledged the official presentation on the morning of February 24th (in the <br /> <br />Council Chamber), by a representative of LOOK Magazine, of the March 10th <br /> <br />edition of said magazine in which Martinsville--as an award winner--was featured. <br /> <br />Mayor Renick and City Manager Noland informed Council that many congratulatory <br /> <br />messages have been received, including the following telegram from the President <br /> <br />of the United States: <br /> <br />You and your people have richly earned the All-America cities award <br />presented by Look Magazine and the National Municipal League. I share <br />your pride in this distinction and appreciate the example of civic <br />involvement and determined action which you provide for urban centers <br />across the country. Only with your kind of initiative and energy can <br />we hope to mobilize our local resources toward the greatest national <br />good.
