TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1988 <br /> <br />A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, with Mayor L. D. Oakes presiding, was held Tuesday, October 11, 1988,i <br />in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 8:00 P.M. (instead of the usua~ <br />7:30 P.M. starting time, in order for members of Council to attend a City <br />School Board public input session in connection with the search by the School <br />Board for a successor to Dr. James E. Calkins, who has announced that he will <br />soon retire from the position of Superintendent of the City School System). <br /> <br />All members of Council were present, viz., L. D. Oakes, Mayor; Clyde L. <br />Williams, Vice-Mayor; William C. Cole, Jr.; Alfred T. Groden; and Allan <br />McClain. <br /> <br />After the invocation and the extending by Mayor Oakes of a cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, Council unanimously approved the minutes of its regular <br />meeting held September 27, 1988, with the understanding that the words, <br /> <br />" .... and report back to Council", in the third and fourth lines of MB page 335 <br /> <br />are to be deleted, as requested by Councilman McClain. <br /> <br />Pursuant to duly published notice, Council conducted a public hearing on a <br />petition filed by The Lester Group seeking the abandonment and closing of "Old" <br />Liberty Street Extension as well as of a portion of North Townes Street, as <br />recommended by the Planning Commission, plus the Commission's recommendation <br />that "New" Liberty Street Extension, recently completed as an industrial access <br />street to serve Tultex Corporation's Sale Knitting Company plant on Franklin <br />Street and Townes Street right-of-ways be accepted into'~he City's street <br />system. There being no objections registered against the petition or against <br />the street-acceptance proposal, Mayor Oakes declared this public hearing <br />closed; whereupon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council <br /> <br /> <br />
