TUESDAY, MAY 10, 1988' <br /> <br />A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, with Mayor L. D. Oakes presiding, was held Tuesday, May 10, 1988, in <br />the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M. All members were <br />present, viz., L. D. Oakes, Mayor; CLyde L. Williams, Vice-Mayor; William C. <br />'Cole, Jr.; Alfred T. Groden; and Allan McClain. <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by Mayor Oakes' cordial welcome to visitors <br />present, Council unanimously approved the minutes--as recorded--of its special <br />meetings held April 18, 1988, and April 19, 1988, and of its regular meeting <br />held April 26, 1988. <br /> <br />In tentative acceptance of the Planning Commission's favorable recommendation, <br />Council called for a duly-advertised public hearing to be conducted by the <br />Council at its forthcoming May 24th regular meeting on a petition filed by <br />Broad Street Christian Church, which seeks the closing and abandonment of an <br />alley, ten (10) feet in width, which is situated perpendicular to the north <br />side of Market Street, between Broad and College Streets. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged receipt of City Manager Brown's memorandum dated May 4, <br />1988, in which he listed--in addition to those suggested by his April 22nd <br />memorandum--further reductions in (and from) his recommended 1988-89 City <br />Budget, the combination of which (barring any adverse circumstances) will <br />provide a General Fund surplus of $300,000.00 at June 30, 1989. Council <br />continued consideration of the Manager's proposed additional deductions, along <br />with other budgetary considerations, to a point in this meeting prior to a <br />scheduled Executive Session. <br /> <br /> <br />
