<br />. <br />>> <br /> <br />TUSSDA.Y <br /> <br />JUNE 10, 1952 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor J. R. Walker presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, <br /> <br />City Hall, on Tuesday, June 10, 1952, at 7:30 o'clock P. M., all members, as <br /> <br />follows, being present: Mayor and Councilman J. R. Walker, and Councilmen <br /> <br />R. S. Brown, Jr., C. P. Craig, R. S. Hodnett, and W. T. Turner. <br /> <br />Minutes of the regular Council lTBeting held May 27, 1952 and of the special <br /> <br />Council lTBetir€ (budget hearing) held June 6, 1952, upon being read, were <br /> <br />approved. <br /> <br />Noting the presence of visitors, Council deferred the regular order of business <br /> <br />to hear such visitors, viz., represenktives of the Martinsville Lions Club whose <br /> <br />spokesman was Attorney Robert H. May, who explained to Council mat through an <br /> <br />oversight on their part the current license tax of $67.00 on sixty-seven chewing- <br /> <br />gum dispensing machines (67 @ $1.00 per machine) was not paid on or before the past <br /> <br />May 31st and, consequently, was now subject to the penalty required by the Tax <br /> <br />Ordinance wr.ich was interpreted by Commissiorer of the Revenue T. Jeff Eggleston as <br /> <br />being $10.00 per one-dollar machine rather than ~nO.OO minimum for all sixty-seven <br /> <br />machines as they maintained it should be. Courcil took no action other man to <br /> <br />assure the Lions Club that it would give the matter due consideration, possibly <br /> <br />rendering its opinion or decision at its next regular meeting. <br /> <br />No action, either, was tal{en by Council on the proposed 1952-53 City Budget; however, <br /> <br />Council called for a special mseting of the Council to consider the budget for Tuesday, <br /> <br />June 17, 1952~ at 2:00 o'clock P. M. <br />
