CHARTER Ch. 6, § 9 <br /> <br />See. 6. Sheriff. <br /> <br /> The sheriff shall attend the terms of the circuit. co ~urt serving such. city and shall act as an <br />officer of such court and shall have the authority, powers and jurisdiction which is granted to <br />sheriffs by general law. He shall receive such compensation and ~moluments allowed by law <br />to sheriffs. He shall perform such other duties as may be prescribed and ordained by the city <br />council. But the sheriff shall have no authority or custody over prisoners held in jail or on the <br />city farm except such as may be required and necessary in serving the court or courts ofsai'cI <br />city. But nothing herein shall be construed to prevent the council from c~nferring add:itionaI <br />authority or custody of prisoners on said sheriff by special authority en, acted by the. council. <br /> <br /> The sheriff, as well as policemen and otl~er officers and conservators of the peace, shall in <br />the matter of criminal offenses have jurisdiction for one m-i~. beyond the, city limits in <br />enforcing the criminal laws of the state. <br /> <br /> The city council may in its discretion allow additional compensation or salary to the <br />sheriff. <br />(Acts 1975, Ch. 416, § 1) <br /> <br />Sec. 7. Commissioner of revenue <br /> <br /> The commissioner of the revenue shall perform all the duties in relation to the assess- <br />ment of property for the purpose of levying taxes that may be ordered by the city council, and <br />such other duties as the council may prescribe or direct. He shall keep his office in some <br />convenient place' in the city, and shall keep therein such books, schedules and records, and in <br />such manner as the city council may direct and prescribe, which books, records, and other ' <br />papers shall be subject to the inspection and examination of the members of the city council, <br />or any committee thereof, and of the collector of city taxes. He shall receive for his services the <br />compensation allowed by law. The commissioner of revenue, in ascertaining the value of real <br />property taxable in said city, shall assess the same as required by law. <br /> <br />Sec. 8. Jailor. <br /> <br /> The jailor of the City of Martinsville, or the person in Charge of the prison or prison farm <br />of the said city is authorized to receive into jail, prison, or prison farm in the manner provided <br />by law all persons apprehended by the sheriff or any police officer of said city for violation of <br />the rules, regulations, bylaws, or ordinances, or for disturbing the peace of the said city, and <br />shall be authorized to retain such persons in his custody until ten o'clock the following <br />morning, at which time they shall be discharged unless regularly committed to his custody by <br />a mittimus or warrant. <br />(Acts 1975, Ch. 416, § 1) <br /> <br />Sec. 9. City treasurer. <br /> <br /> (a) The city treasurer shall, before entering upon the duties of his office, give bond with <br />sufficient surety to be approved by the council, in the penalty of such amount as may be fixed <br />by the council from time to time, payable to the City of Martinsville, conditioned for the true <br />and faithful performance of the duties of his of~ce~ The treasurer shall be 'responsible for the <br /> <br /> <br />
