February 8, 2000 <br /> <br /> Council considered business from the floor. Betsy Ivey, President of the <br />Martinsville Education Association, stated, "1 invite everyone to participate as a guest <br />speaker in 'Reading Across America' on March 2, 2000. Our goal is for every child to <br />be in the company of a book." <br /> <br /> Council considered approval of a request by the West Piedmont Planning District <br />Commission to establish the City's Regional Comprehensive Economic Development <br />Strategy Priority Projects for 2000 - 2001. Thomas Harned, Assistant to the City <br />Manager for Development, stated, "Primarily, Phase IV of the Rails to Trails project was <br />added to Priority 1; there are no changes to Priorities 2 and 3. With financial <br />constraints, we will be unable to fund all projects planned for this year. However, we <br />want to stay in the pipeline which allows us to stay in the positive to seek other grants. <br />There's approximately four to five years of activity just in Priority ;1 ." Vice Mayor Teague <br />moved to authorize the City Manager to transmit this updated information to the <br />Economic Development Authority through the WPPDC; the motion was duly seconded <br />and carried by the following vote, with all members voting: Vote 5 - 0; Yeas (5) - <br />Crabtree, Dallas, Haskell, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - None. <br /> Renee Wyatt, Public Information Officer, stated, "The United Way of Martinsville <br /> & Henry County recently held their annual meeting. City employee Sam Owens was <br /> named 'Volunteer of the Year'. Chief Rogers was elected to the Board of DirectOrs. <br /> Earl B. Reynolds, Jr., City Manager, was recognized for serving two consecutive terms <br /> on the Board of Directors. The City of Martinsville was presented the 'President's <br /> Award' with a ten percent increase in full-time employees contributions, totaling <br /> <br />$11,509." <br /> <br /> <br />
