82
March 28, 2000

asked, "Can dental assistants do sealants?" Dr. Roycroft replied, "Yes, but a dentist
has to be present." Council Member Roop asked, "Do you receive a plan from the State
regarding the sealant program? Is the plan based on community needs? Where does
direction come from?" Dr. Roycroft stated, "As a pediatrician, the only fault I see is
using dentists without tooth decay experience. The State would put the needs of
children ahead of adult services. Direction comes from the State Board of Health." Vice
Mayor Teague asked, "Would you consider working with a committee of local dentists to
evaluate your dental program?" This is a real
opportunity to show those that need it. It's a very small cost.". Council Member Haskell
asked, "If we were to help start this program, do you think it's possible for the State to
fund it in the future?" Dr. Rudder replied, "Yes, after it's shown to be popular and being
used." Nancy Carter, of 1112 Cherokee Trail, stated, "Council was very responsive to
the Salvation Army and Family Life Services with donations. However, neither group
was evaluated to this degree." Council Member Roop stated, "Those two gifts were
one-time donations. Tonight, we're looking at annual funding." Council Member
Haskell stated, "Those gifts were given after very thorough research by Staff." Vice
Mayor Teague stated, "We have two issues tonight. First, we're doing wisely what
