7O <br /> <br /> March 14, 2000 <br /> <br />Mrs. Wyatt stated, "The City of Martinsville and Martinsville City Schools worked <br />together on a shared display for the Business Trade Show 2000. The display <br />showcased the Martinsville Information Network. This new fiber-optic infrastructure has <br />the power to link the information resources of the City fiber-optic communications. <br />MINet will help propel Martinsville and Henry County into.the technology-driven, twenty- <br />first century. Benefits for citizens and government workers alike will quickly become <br />evident as education, traffic, emergency systems, and civic activities are streamlined <br />and simplified.. As a result of the City workers' efforts in featuring this technology, the <br />display was awarded the Exhibitors Choice Award." Mrs. Adkins added, "The City and <br />Schools had a huge presence. Thanks to Chief Rogers for being so conscientious of <br />parking and traffic and to Fire Marshal Monday for getting the facility up to standard." <br /> <br /> City Manager Reynolds stated, "Last Tuesday, we took a tdp to Washington to <br /> deal with issues regarding the economic down-turn. The three initiatives include: I - a <br /> bill is currently being drafted to extend the maximum length that a person can receive <br /> training under the Retraining Act, raising it from 78 to 104 weeks; 2- contacts regarding <br /> info-tech opportunities in Martinsville including the development of a video; and 3 - <br /> some type of direct, block grant for community-specific funding. Since I've been back, <br /> I've met with key members of the Congressmen's staffs and reemphasized the project <br /> list." <br /> <br /> Council considered an update report for the Southside Community Improvement <br /> Project. Wayne D. P. Knox, Planning, Zoning, and Housing Manager, stated, "We were <br /> officially awarded the grant in November 1999.
