January 11,2000 <br /> <br /> A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, was held on January 11, 2000, in Council Chamber of the Municipal Building, <br />beginning at 7:00 P. M., with Mayor Mark Crabtree presiding. Council Members present <br />included: Mark A. Crabtree, Mayor; M. Gene Teague, Vice Mayor; and Council <br />Members Bruce H. T. Dallas, Elizabeth H. Haskell, and Terry L. Roop. <br /> <br /> Following delivery of the invocation by Council Member Dallas, Mayor Crabtree <br />welcomed everyone to the meeting. <br /> <br /> Vice Mayor Teague moved to approve, as presented, the <br /> <br />December 14, 1999, meeting; the motion was duly seconded and <br /> <br />Minutes of the <br />carried by the <br /> <br />following vote, with all members voting: <br />Haskell, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - None. <br /> <br /> Council considered adoption of a <br /> <br />Vote 5 - 0; Yeas (5) - Crabtree, Dallas, <br /> <br />Resolution allowing City employees to <br /> <br />purchase select prior service credit through the Virginia Retirement Service on a tax- <br />deferred basis through payroll deduction and authorizing the City to submit these <br />monies to the VRS. Iris Read, Human Resources Manager, stated, "This option was <br />not available until July 1, 1999, and is of no cost to the City. The number of employees <br />that would benefit is unknown at this time. Over 250 jurisdictions am already under this <br />plan." Council Member Roop moved to adopt the following resolution; the motion was <br />duly seconded and carried by the following vote, with all members voting: Vote 5 - 0; <br />Yeas (5) - Crabtree, Dallas, Haskell, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - None: <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville, Virginia, desires to provide its <br /> employees with tax deferral pursuant to Section 414(h) of the <br /> Internal Revenue Code with respect to their member contributions <br /> to the Virginia Retirement System, the State Police Officers <br /> Retirement System and the Judicial Retirement System (collectively <br /> <br /> <br />
