TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1988 <br /> <br />mid-1989. Initially, petitioner's plans call for a supermarket (grocery store) <br />and a drug store and, subsequently, several small stores and shops. In <br />addition, in response to an inquiry from Council, Mr. White indicated that an <br />off-street walkway from the center to nearby Spruce Village Apartments will be <br />provided for the convenience of elderly citizens residing in Spruce Village. <br />There being no other persons to be heard and' no registered objections to the <br />petition, Mayor Oakes declared this public hearing closed; whereupon motion, <br />duly seconded and unanimously carried, and in acceptance of the Planning <br />Commission's recommendation that Council approve said petition, Council adopted <br />the following ordinance effecting the requested rezoning and amending the City's <br />Zoning Map accordingly: <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, in regular meeting assembled this ninth day of <br />February, 1988, that the Zoning Map of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, be--and is hereby--amended to the extent that portions <br />of Lots Nos. 2 and 27, situated on the northeast side of <br />Brookdale Street, near its intersection with Spruce Street, and <br />heretofore or currently owned by the Whittle Family Irrevocable <br />Trust, be--and they are hereby--rezoned from R-9 Residential to <br />C-1 Commercial. Said lots are shown on Map Sections Nos. 46 <br />and/or 55 of the City's Tax Map and the portions thereof hereby <br />rezoned are shown on a drawing entitled, "Site Plan 3", as <br />prepared by Setzer, Brodt & Goodwin, PA, which is on file in the <br />office of the City Planner for the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED by this Council that, an emergency <br />existing, this ordinance shall be in force on and after February <br /> 10, 1988. <br /> <br />As a result of recent conferences with officials of W. Mo Bassett Furniture <br />Company, and particularly with Mr. Eddie Wall, Plant Manager (who was present at <br />this meeting), designed to develop ways and means of improving traffic and <br />pedestrian safety along Rives Road in the vicinity of the W.
