LAND USE

This is a very important element of the Comprehensive Plan and a
great deal of thought wasgiven to the development of the Zoning
and Subdivision Ordinances all of which is designed to promote
the growth and development of the land areas' of the City in
orderly manner. .From time~to time, amendments are made to these
Ordinances as deemed appropriate to meet the needs of our commu-
nity. !As of the present, both Ordinances are undergoing an
update by the Planning Commission which will be presented to
Council in the near future for their consideration. The objec-
tive of the update should be to streamline these Ordinances in
order to promote industrial, commercial and residential growth.

SUMMARY

Over the years Martinsville has responded to community needs
through comprehensive planning and program implementation,
however, situations change from time to time that require new
approaches. The City government and other agencies of the City
have attempted to respond to these changes appropriately and
will continue to look at new ideas and explore new methods of
promoting the well being of Martinsville. Any suggestions or
ideas regarding any community project, problem or need would be
very much appreciated. If Council feels that a special commit-
tee is needed to study and review in a comprehensive way any
matter related to the community as a whole we will be gladto
study the manner in which such a committee should be structured
to perform any such study. There is a need to be imaginative
and visionary with respect to planning and developing a course
of action that will meet the needs and aspirations of Martins-
ville and Henry County now and in the future.

/ GWB

GWS/jbl
Enclosure

8
