~.-~T. Groden; and Allan McClain. <br /> <br /> TUESDAY. ~Y 8. 1990 <br /> <br />A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the~City of <br />,Martinsvitle, Virginia, with Mayor L.D. Oakes presiding, was held <br />Tuesday, May 8, 1-990, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning <br />fat 9:30 A.M.1 All members of Council were present: ~L.D. Oakes, <br />Mayor; Clyde L. Williams, Vice-Mayor; William C. Cole, Jr.; Alfred <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by Mayor Oakes'-cordial welcome to <br />visitors~, Council approved the minutes.of the regular meeting of <br />April 24, 1990 and the special meeting of April!30, 1990, with <br />minor corrections being made prior to publication in the Minute <br />Book. <br /> <br />Under business from the floor, Mr. Joe Finley appeared before <br />Council and read a prepared statement in which he stated that <br />during his campaign for Martinsville City Council, the following <br />issues kept emerging: (1) Lack of representation--"We don't have <br />anyone in our area to represent us"; (2) "We don't have enough <br />Police to protect our neighborhoods"; and (3) "We don't have a <br />facility that will accommodate large crowds for basketball games, <br />concerts involving nationally known celebrities, meeting rooms for <br />local organizations, etc. Mr. Finley suggested the following: (1) <br />That City Council appoint an 18 member advisory committee composed <br />of three citizens from each precinct (two adults, a male and a <br />female, and one person between the ages of 18 and 21). The purpose <br />of the committee would be to discuss, present and suggest solutions <br /> <br /> <br />
