THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 1990 <br /> <br />3O <br /> <br />agreement to upgrade the central processing unit. <br /> <br />Following-a question by Councilman McClain, Mr.~ Brown explained that the <br />increased expenditure for drug enforcement is budgeted as an expenditure of <br />$66,272, with offsetting revenues being projected in the form of a grant of <br />$49,704.'~ Following a discussion by various Councilmen, it was noted that <br />Council should know the status of the requested grant .·prior. to final budget <br /> <br />approval. .... .... ' - <br /> <br />In response to a question by Councilman McClain regarding physical exams for <br />firefighters, 'Mr.. Brown- explained that the City staff's interpretation of <br />federal regulations indicated that these exams are mandatory for City <br />firefighters. However, it was noted that the N.F.P.A. 1500 standard (which <br />requires all firefighters to have exams) was not adopted as law by the <br />Commonwealth of Virginia. Councilman McClain pointed out ·that the City is <br />dealing with two different sets of standards, one of which ~requires fire- <br />fighters meeting certain criteria to have exams and the· other which requires <br />all firefighters to have exams, but is not Virginia law. ~ ·- ~ <br /> <br />In. responseto a question by Vice-Mayor Williams, Mr. Brown and Director·of <br />Parks.and Recreation Herb Hughes explained that the .refurbishing of the tennis <br />courts would be a repair of the existing courts, not a complete reconstruction. <br /> <br />Following questions by various Councilmen, Mr. Brown stated that $18,900 was <br />included~ in the budget for uniform rental. Councilman McClainand Mayor Oakes <br />indicated that they would like to assess the cost-of renting versus buying <br />uniforms and the provision of uniforms in general before they would approve <br /> <br /> <br />
