MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1989

/I j

The concluding presentation by the School Board listed and described the School
System's 25 school buses, of which 17 are from the 1970-1977 model years and
have been adjudged as not having adequate safety provisions; consequently,
these 17 must be replaced (at an estimated cost of $30,000 each) along with
many like buses now owned/operated by twenty-seven other school divisions
within the State of Virginia. Council was informed, however, that the State
Department of Education, having received a favorable ruling from the Virginia
Attorney General, will soon release a "Request for PrOposal" form to be used by
those Virginia school divisions affected by the replacement ruling, who elect,
to enter into a state-wide lease/purchase agreement by which the Commonwealth
of Virginia will provide a low-cost financing. The deadline date for the bus
replacements has been set for June 30, 1991.

After Councilman McClain suggested that, while most appreciative of the various
reports and the efforts which made them possible, future such meetings and
presentations be designed to allow more time for discussion, inasmuch as
members of Council generally are provided advance copies of reports~ and
following closing comments by Mayor Oakes and School Board Vice-Chairman
Edwards, the meeting was declared adjourned at 10:10 P.M.

W.
