TUESDAY, NOVM~BER 14, 1989

By letter dated October 24, 1989, Mr. Barry A. Bowles, Vice-President of
Stanley W. Bowles Corporation, General Contractors, informed Council that his
firm is in the process of developing (for Mr. Walker Box) a portion of the
block encompassed by Market, College, Chestnut, and Bridge Streets and, also,
will be regrading, paving, and landscaping some of that area for Broad Street
Christian Church. In addition to the stated need to have College Street closed
for a period of time to move a large quantity of dirt across College Street,
Mr. Bowles requested that, because of these major improvements, the City

" ..... consider improving College Street with new sidewalks, curb and gutter, as

well as (with) new pavement". Council concurred with City Manager Brown's
suggestion that this request be considered in the preparing of the City's
forthcoming 1990-91 budget.

Council commended the City's Transportation Safety Commission and theCity's
Police Department for their on-going efforts in the interest of local
pedestrian safety, resulting in the City having been recently recognized by the
American Automobile Association's Annual Pedestrian Protection Evaluation, with
the City receiving the Annual Pedestrian Safety Award at a luncheon in
Richmond, Virginia, November 6, 1989. Attending this luncheon from
Mar~insville were Transportation Safety Commission members Miss Melanie Hain
and Mr. John Mitchell, and Commission advisors Police Chief Terry L. Roop and
Public Works Director Leon E. Towarnicki. Present at this Council meeting
covered by these minutes and recognized for their interest and efforts in
promoting pedestrian-and-traffic safety as members of the Transportation Safety
Commission were Mr. Martin Kravitz (Chairman) and Vice-Mayor Willjams, as were
Messrs. Roop and Towarnicki, hereinbefore mentioned.
