THURSDAY, MAY 18, 1989'

By Mrs. O'Neal
Quality of education will be diminished by School Board "cuts";
is seriously considering resigning from local school system and
moving elsewhere, partly because she is scheduled to transfer
from Martinsville High School next year, from a level for which
she is qualified. to teach and in which her quality of teaching
has not been questioned, to the City's Junior High School..

By Mr. Matthews
On perception that City Council is satisfied with the "status
quo" or with a sub-par school system, as indicated by Mr.
Matthews, Councilman Groden pointed out that the School Board
proposed the elimination of certain personnel...not City
Council; and, as to the inferences that the City's school system
is sub-par, which is the first time such inferences have been
made, Mr. Groden inquired as to howlong the system has been
sub-par. With reference to an inquiry from Mr. Matthews
pertaining to the maintenance of the tennis courts at
Martinsville High School (generally under the jurisdiction of
the City,s Recreation Department), Council concurred with
Councilman Cole's request that City Manager Brown study the
maintenance/repair needs of these. courts and report thereon to
Council.

By Mrs. Brown
While pleased with the quality of education provided her
children by the City School System, is concerned with budgetary
effects upon teacher-pupil ratio(s).

By Mr. Varn 7
Although with no children in the local school system now, is
concerned most with the negative perceptions of parents of
school-age children; noted, however, that he and his wife, both
of whom are "products" of the local school system, elected to
reside in Martinsville because of its good school system, as
they knew it. Mr. Varn urged that worthwhile'programs be
adequately funded.

By Mrs. Mallinak
Noting low test scores and the using of a girl's locker-room as
a classroom, indicated local school system has been going "down-
hill" over the past four years; there's great' need to educate
school children to the best of their abilities/potential and for
everyone to be committed to developing/maintaining a superior
school system. As to some opinions that the School Board has
"turned back" considerable amounts of un-used funds to the City
each year, School Board Chairman cited documentation that this
has not been the case in recent years.
