TUESDAY, AUGUST 13, 1996 <br />Council then recessed in order to receive a demonstration of new voting <br />machine equipment by Global Election Systems. <br /> <br />207 <br /> <br />Council reconvened and acknowledged a financial report for the month <br />ending June 30, 1996 and a report on a tentative schedule of City <br />Council retreat activities. <br /> <br />In matters not on the agenda, the following items were discussed: (1) <br />Council Member Haskell, citing low scores on standardized tests by <br />Martinsville Middle School 8th graders, suggested the Council ask the <br />School Board to evaluate the City of Danville's voluntary, year-round, <br />elementary school; (2) Vice-Mayor Crabtree asked that a future Council <br />work session be scheduled with the Director of the Piedmont Regional <br />CSB to review their programs; (3) Mayor Adams noted a recent positive <br />inspection of the City Landfill; (4) Mayor Adams noted the need for <br />public awareness of the Spruce Street storm drainage work; (5) Mayor <br />Adams suggested the Transportation Safety Commission and Gateway <br />Streetscape Foundation work together to ensure tree planrings do not <br />impede traffic sight distance; (6) Council Member Dallas cited a <br />problem with a property owner parking a vehicle which impedes sight <br />distance for motorists attempting to exit south Massey Street; and (7) <br />it was suggested that Council schedule a joint retreat with the City <br />School Board. <br /> <br />In accordance with Section 2.1-344 (A) of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, <br />and as amended) and upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous <br />recorded vote, Council convened into Executive Session for the purpose <br />of discussing an appointment to the Central Piedmont Private Industry <br />Council Board, as authorized by Subsection 1.
