TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26. 1995 <br /> <br />A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George B. Adams, Jr. presiding, was <br />held Tuesday, September 26, 1995 at Albert Harris Elementary School, <br />beginning at 7:30 P.M. All members of Council were present: George B. <br />Adams, Jr., Mayor; L. D. Oakes, Vice-Mayor; Mark A. Crabtree; M. Gene <br />Teague; and Clyde L. Williams. <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by Mayor Adams' cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, Council approved the minutes of its August 25, <br />September 7, 11 and 12, 1995 meetings as circulated and amended. <br /> <br />Council conducted a Neighborhood Town Meeting. Mr. Reynolds reviewed <br />a packet of information regarding recent activity by various City <br />departments in the West Side area. (1) Lafayette Jones, 501 Second <br />Street, inquired as to the change in location of the School Crossing <br />Guard from the intersection of Memorial Boulevard, Church Street and <br />Fayette. Street to in front of Albert Harris School; Chief of Police <br />Terry L. Roop and Paulette Simington, Principal of Albert Harris <br />School, explained that the change was made to improve safety near the <br />School and that a School Bus now picks up all children before they <br />reach the intersection; (2) Gloria Hylton, 402 Second Street, inquired <br />as to the progress toward developing a new policy for shared-cost curb <br />and gutter projects, citing "B" Street as an example of where such a <br />project is desired by several residents who are willing to pay their <br />portion, however, the R. P. Thomas Trucking Company does not wish to <br />participate; City Manager Earl B. Reynolds, Jr. stated the Staff and <br />City Attorney were working on this issue and noted Council had <br />appropriated $50,000 for these projects for FY 94-96; and (3) Bonnie <br />Wilson, representing the Virginia Museum of Natural History, expressed <br /> <br /> <br />
