TUESDAY, JULY 14, 1998 <br /> <br />Planning Commission agreed with the proposed change, and that the reduction to seven members would make <br /> <br />the Commission more workable. There were no other public comments and the Hearing was dosed. Upon <br /> <br />motion duly seconded, and by a vote offour-to-one, Council Member Dallas opposed, Ordinance No. 98-7 <br /> <br />was adopted on second reading, as follows: <br /> <br />CITY OF MARTINSVILLE, VIRGINIA <br /> <br />ORDINANCE NO. 98-7 <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in regular session assembled July 14, <br />1998, that it does hereby amend Chapter 2--Administration, Article VII--Planning Commission, Section 2- <br />105--Created; composition; appointment, etc., of members, Subsection (a) of the City Code, as follows: <br /> <br />ARTICLE VII. PLANNING COMMISSION <br /> <br />Sec. 2-105. Created; composition; appointment, etc., of members. <br /> <br />(a) There shall be a city planning commission, which shall consist of seven (7) members, who shall be <br />appointed by the city council. One member may be an administrative official of the city, whose term <br />of office as a member of the commission shall correspond to his official tenure, unless otherwise <br />terminated. One member of the commission may also be a member of the board of zoning appeals, in <br />which event his term of office as a member of the planning commission shall expire with his term of <br />office as a member of the board of zoning appeals, unless otherwise replaced. <br /> <br />Council next considered two matters related to the City Sheriff's Office. The first of these was the acceptance <br />and appropriation of $57,197 in Federal funds from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services for <br />a Multidisciplinary Partnerships Grant. Sheriff Steve Draper was present to address Council, and stated that <br />the grant funds to be received were to be used to fund an ongoing grant program which provided substance <br />counseling for individuals referred by the Courts and defense attomeys, or jail inmates who volunteered for <br />the program. The Sheriff stated that the ultimate goal of the program was to reduce recidivism by dealing <br />with substance abusers through a program providedat no cost to them.
