TUESDAY, MAY 26, 1998 <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the findings of these students efforts clearly showed a need for continued and <br />carefully focused effort towards helping the homeless and addressing their needs in terms of food, <br />shelter, clothing and job skill development assistance, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, such civic consciousness and dedication to the community at large is a quality which <br />deserves encouragement in the youth of the Martinsville community, now, therefore <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in regular session <br />assembled May 26, 1998, that it does hereby commend the students of Ms. Betsy Ivey's Middle <br />School Class for their exemplary effort on behalf of the citizens of Martinsville, and further does <br />hereby endorse and support their efforts to address the challenges and issues of homelessness in <br />the Martinsville-Henry County Community. <br /> <br />The next item on Council' s agenda was the need to consider adoption, on second reading, of <br />Ordinance No. 98-5 on the City's Budget for fiscal year 1998-99 and the establishment of tax <br />rates. Under the Public Heating portion of this item brief discussion took place regarding an <br />appeal by the Commonwealth's Attorney for funding of an additional $10,000 for a contract part- <br />time clerical position. Upon motion duly seconded and by unanimous vote Council approved this <br />addition to the proposed Budget. Following closure of the Public Heating there was brief <br />discussion by Council regarding their significant commitment of funding for Education within the <br />proposed Budget.
