Adams, Jr. presiding, was held Tuesday, May 26, 1998, in the Council Chamber, City
Hall, beginning at 7:00 P.M. The following members of Council were present: George B.
Adams, Jr., Mayor; Dr. Mark A. Crabtree, Vice-Mayor; Elizabeth H. Haskell and M. Gene
Teague. Council Member Bruce H. T. Dallas was absent due to illness. City Manager Earl B.
Reynolds, Jr. was also absent, attending to family matters outside the City.

After the invocation, provided by Mayor George B. Adams, Jr., and followed by the Mayor's
cordial welcome to visitors present, Council took up the first item on their agenda, that of
Business from the Floor. Mr. Buford Hairston of 1148 Banner Street came forward to express
his concern about a need for curb and gutter work in ~his neighborhood. Mr. Hairston stated that
the work on his street had been needed for at least four years and, although he had been promised
that it would be finished several times, nothing had been done. He stated that in a recent
conversation with City staff he did not feel that he had gotten an adequate response to his
concern. Council Member Haskell stated that there was, indeed, a problem at the location and
Mayor Adams agreed. Council Member Teague stated that Mr. Hairston should be provided
accurate information on a schedule on when the work in question would be done, and Assistant
City Manager Dewey Cashwell stated that he would follow up on this matter and see that Mr.
Hairston received this information as soon as possible. There were no other speakers from the
floor.

Council next considered a presentation and request by students from Martinsville Middle School
regarding curbside recycling.
