TUESDAY, MARCH 24, 1998 <br /> <br />A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George B. <br /> <br />Adams, Jr. presiding, was held Tuesday, March 24, 1998, in the Albert Harris School Auditorium, beginning <br />at 7:00 P.M. A Reception for members of the community was held at 6:00 P.M. in the school. The <br />following members of Council were present: George B. Adams, Jr., Mayor; Dr. Mark A. Crabtree, Vice- <br />Mayor; Bruce H.T. Dallas, Elizabeth H. Haskell and M. Gene Teague. <br /> <br />After the invocation, provided by Mayor Adams, and followed by the Mayor's cordial welcome to visitors <br />present, Council approved, upon motion duly seconded, and by unanimous vote, the minutes of its meetings <br />of March 5, 10, and 12, 1998. <br /> <br />Council's next item on the Agenda was the conduction of a neighborhood Town Meeting. A number of <br />concerns and issues were raised by residents at this time, as follows: <br /> <br /> Reverend Freddie Flood of 101 Endless St. - Stated the need for the City to continue to enforce its <br />ordinances with regard to abandoned and junk vehicles. Reverend Flood offered to provide a list of vehicles <br />he had identified as possibly falling under the provisions of the Ordinance, and City Manager Earl Reynolds <br />accepted the list and promised to have the vehicles checked. <br /> <br /> Mr. J. B. Travis of 401 Fifth St. - Stated that his neighborhood had been improved as a result of <br />demolition of dilapidated houses, cleaning of vacant lots, and increased police presence. <br /> <br /> Ms. Brenda Manns of 205 Massey St. - Stated that there is too much traffic on her street, that many <br />of them were not from the neighborhood, and that traffic frequently comes down the street the wrong way. <br />She expressed a need for more frequent and vigorous police patrols and spot checks of vehicles and drivers. <br />Council Member Dallas agreed with Ms. Manns, stating that he had observed all these same problems. <br /> <br /> Reverend Freddie Flood of 101Endless St. - Agreed with Ms. Marms and cited his belief that much of <br />what Ms. Marms had described was related to drug trafficking in the neighborhood. Council Member <br />Haskell asked Chief of Police David Edwards to respond to the comments made, and Chief Edwards stated <br /> <br /> <br />
