TUESDAY. JANUARY 13. 1998 ~ <br />A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George B. <br /> <br />Adams, Jr., presiding, was held Tuesday, January 13, 1998, in the Council Chamber, 'City Hall, beginning at <br />7:00 P.M. The following members of Council were present: George B. Adams, Jr., Mayor; Dr~ Mark A. <br />Crabtree, Vice-Mayor; Bruce H.T. Dallas, Elizabeth H. Haskell, and M. Gene Teague. <br /> <br />After the invocation, provided by Council Member M. Gene Teague, and followed by Mayor Adams' cordial <br />welcome to visitors present, Council approved, upon motion duly seconded, and by unanimous vote, the <br />minutes of its meetings of November 25 (2 sets), and December 8, 9, 11, and 18, 1997. <br /> <br />121 <br /> <br />Couneil's first item for consideration was the consideration of adoption of and presentation of a Resolution <br />expressing Council' s appreciation to Hooker Furniture Corporation for its donation of the Hooker Field <br />facility to the City. Upon motion duly seconded, and by unanimous approval, Council adopted the following <br />Resolution, which was presented to Mr. Larry Ryder of Hooker Fumiture: <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THANKS TO <br />HOOKER FURNITURE CORPORATION <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Hooker Furniture Corporation is a major industry in the Martinsville-Henry County area, <br />offering employment, capital investment and other contributions to the improvement of economic conditions <br />in our area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Hooker family and Corporation have generously supported civic projects in Martinsville for <br />many years; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Hooker Furniture Corporation has donated the Hooker Field Complex on Commonwealth <br />Boulevard and Chatham Heights to the City of Martinsville for develop-ment as a baseball park and <br />recreational facility; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the donation by Hooker Furniture Corporation includes five and seventy-six thousandths acres <br />of prime land and several improvements making up the present home of the Martinsville Phillies and local <br />youth baseball, will, by its generosity, help bring more recreation, more visitors, more travel and tourism, and <br />a better quality of life to our area; and <br /> <br /> <br />
