TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2:5, 1997 <br />A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martin_sville, Virginia, with Mayor. George B. <br /> <br />Adams, Jr., presiding, was held Tuesday, September 23, 1997, in the Theater Room of the Martinsville <br />Middle School, beginning at 7:00 P.M. The regular meeting was preceded by a reception for the public, <br />beginning at 6:00 P.M., in the School cafeteria. The following members of Council were present: George B. <br />Adams, Jr., Mayor; Dr. Mark '~k:; Crabtree, Vice-Mayor; Bruce H.T. Dallas, and M. Gene Teague. <br />Councilmember Elizabeth H. Haskell, who was away from the City, was absent. <br /> <br />After the invocation, provided by Vice-Mayor Crabtree, and followed by Mayor Adams' cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, Council approved, upon motion duly seconded, and by unanimous vote, the minutes of its <br />meetings of September 4 and September 9, 1997, as amended. <br /> <br />Councfi next considered adoption of a resolution expressing Councfi's appreciation of the gift <br />to the City from Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc. of their manufacturing facility and <br />industrial site on Rives Road, in Martinsville. Upon motion duly seconded, and by unanimous <br />vote, the following resolution was adopted, and a framed copy of the document was presented <br />to NIx. Grover Elliot, Vice President for Strategic Planning for Basserr Furniture: <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THANKS TO <br />BASSETT FURNITURE INDUSTRIES <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Bassett Furniture Industries is a major industry in the Martinsville-Henry <br />County area, offering employment, capital investment and other contributions to the <br />improvement of economic conditions in our area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Bassett Furniture Industries has donated the W. M. Bassett Furniture Company <br />manufacturing plant on Rives Road to the City of Martinsville Redevelopment and Housing <br />Authority for redevelopment as an industrial park; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the donation by Bassett Furniture Industries includes sixty-five acres of prime <br />industrial land and seven hundred thousand square feet of manufacturing space under roof, <br />served by all necessary utilities and a railroad siding of the Norfolk Southern Raftroad will, <br /> <br /> <br />
