TUESDAY. JANUARY 14. 1997 <br /> <br />A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George B. Adams, Jr. presiding, was <br />held Tuesday, January 14, 1997 in the Council Chamber, City Hall, <br />beginning at 7:30 P.M. All members of Council were present: George B. <br />Adams, Jr., Mayor; Mark A. Crabtree, Vice-Mayor; Bruce H. T. Dallas; <br />Elizabeth H. Haskell; and M. Gene Teague. <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by Mayor Adams' cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, Council approved the minutes of its meetings of <br />December 10, 16 and 30, 1996 as circulated. <br /> <br />A retirement stipend was presented to Timothy G. Ingram, Police <br />Department, 1980-96. <br /> <br />Council considered recognizing the Martinsville Uptown Revitalization <br />Association (MURA) for receipt of an Award of Merit from the Virginia <br />Downtown Development Association (VDDA). Don Harwood, Board Member of <br />VDDA, presented the award to MURAin recognition of its Uptown T.G.I.F. <br />Concert series. MURA President Kevin Reed expressed appreciation to <br />all who had assisted with the T.G.I.F. series. <br /> <br />Council considered conducting a public hearing on a request by Stepping <br />Stones, Inc. on the adoption of a Resolution which would recommend real <br />estate tax exemption status for property located at 600 Northside Drive <br />to the Virginia General Assembly. Pamela Pritchett, Executive Director <br />of Stepping Stones, noted the organization provides services to <br />developmentally disabled and physically handicapped persons. Ms. <br />Pritchett stated Stepping Stones is the only day support program <br />located in the City for the severely and profoundly mentally <br /> <br /> <br />
