M Martinsville

Meeting Date:
Item No:
Department:
Issue:

Summary:

Attachments:

Recommendations:

City Council
Agenda Summary

August 26, 2008
4.

Fire Department

Recognition of personnel involved in the Martinsville City Fire
& EMS Department being upgraded by the Insurance Service
Office (ISO) from a rating of Class 5 to Class 4.

The Insurance Service Office (ISO) recently upgraded the
Martinsville Fire & EMS Department's Public Protection
Classification (PPC) rating from a Class 5 to Class 4. ISO is an
independent organization that serves insurance companies,
fire departments, insurance regulators, and others by
providing information about risk. In each community, ISO
analyzes the relevant data and assigns a Public Protection
Classification-a number from 1 to 10. Class 1 represents an
exemplary fire suppression program, and Class 10 indicates
that the area's fire suppression program does not meet ISO's
minimum criteria.

A community's PPC depends on fire alarm and
communications systems, the fire department, and the water
supply system. Martinsville is one of 25 cities to have a fire
department with a Class 4 rating and only 17 fire districts in
the state have a better rating than Martinsville. The fire
department has been working on upgrading its classification
since 1999; the last classification was done in 1991.

Fire Chief Kenneth Draper, Water Resources Director, John
Dyches, Director Wes Ashley and Operations Supervisor J. R.
Powell from the Martinsville- Henry County Communications
Center will attend the meeting representing the departments
that made this new classification possible.

none

Publicly recognize these individuals and their respective
organizations for this outstanding achievement and direct this
matter to the attention of City residents.
