<br />Mayor Reynolds announced that Fred Hutchins, Regional Representative <br /> <br />for Senator Jim Webb, who was scheduled to attend the meeting, had a conflict <br /> <br />and would attend the April 24 Council meeting. <br /> <br />Council Member Lawson moved to adopt the following Resolution <br /> <br />recognizing the 60th anniversary of the Martinsville Speedway; the motion was <br /> <br />duly seconded and carried by the following vote, with all members voting: Vote <br /> <br />4-0. Yeas (4) - Reynolds, Clark, Ferrill, Lawson. Nays (0) - None. Absent (1) _ <br /> <br />Whereas, Martinsville Speedway opened in 1947 as a local dirt track operated by the late H. Clay Earles; <br /> <br />Whereas, the half-mile oval Martinsville Speedway was sanctioned for racing in 1948 by the National <br />Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) in its inaugural season as the nation's premier stock <br />car racing association, and is the only original NASCAR track still holding NASCAR races; and <br /> <br />Whereas, by serving as the host for twice-yearly races enjoyed by international audiences on television <br />and radio, Martinsville Speedway has made the City of Martinsville a recognizable brand name to both <br />dedicated and casual racing fans throughout the world; and <br /> <br />Whereas, NASCAR racing's biggest names have won races at Martinsville Speedway, and have <br />expressed their appreciation to the people of the region and the owners and operators of Martinsville <br />Speedway for the level of competition and hospitality available at the venue; and <br /> <br />Whereas, fans of short-track racing prize Martinsville Speedway for its tight turns, its broad views of all <br />action on the track, and the driver skill necessary to compete successfully on its long straight-aways, <br />narrow comers and low degree of banking; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the Speedway has long held a tradition of showcasing the region's industry by awarding <br />furniture products as prizes, furthering brand names of the region's manufacturers; and <br /> <br />Whereas, Martinsville Speedway continues to grow and expand its seating capacity and corporate <br />hospitality spaces to meet the growing demand of NASCAR fans, corporate supporters and a worldwide <br /> <br />Whereas, Martinsville Speedway operates as a subsidiary of International Speedway Corporation and <br />under the direction of track president Clay Campbell, the grandson of the track's founder; and <br />
