M Martinsville

City Council
Agenda Summary

Meeting Date:
Item No:
Department:

June 5,2007
7.

Community Development

Issue: Consider setting a public hearing on a recommendation from
the Martinsville Planning Commission to be held July 24,2007 to abandon a short
section of Franklin Street located near the overpass bridge, on the west side of
Commonwealth Centre at 101 E. Commonwealth Boulevard, as shown on Tax
map 23 of the City of Martinsville.

Summary: The owners of the Commonwealth Centre are constructing a
new elevator addition on the west side of their building that would encroach into
the city's right of way. They have petitioned the city to relocate 7,652 square feet
of roadway alongside their building in order to allow the addition. In exchange for
this relocation, Commonwealth Boulevard Associates, LLC and the Lester Group,
Inc. will convey residual parcels containing 21, 292 square feet to the City of
Martinsville.

Attachments:

Recommendation letter from Planning Commission & map

Recommendations: The relocation of this portion of Franklin Street will enhance
the use of an existing building and improve the current street design, curb and
guttering. Therefore, staff recommends this request be approved.
