<br />:3 <br /> <br />TUES DAY <br /> <br />NOVEMBER 9, 1954 <br /> <br />a letter so conveying Council's appreciation to Lee Telephone Company. <br /> <br />The following ordinance (amendment), clarifying a similar ordinance adopted by Council <br />on June 22, 1954 and. relating to public drunkenness, was adopted with emergency clause <br /> <br />attached: <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in regular <br />meeting assembled this ninth day of November, 1954, that Title VIII, Chapter I, <br />Section 2., of the Martinsville City Code enti tled "Wrongs and Offenses <br />Generally" be amended to read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 2. Drunkenness in Public. If a:ny person arrived at the age of <br />discretion get or be drunk in public he shall be deemed guilty of a <br />misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof shall be fined not less than one <br />dollar nor more than ten dollars. <br /> <br />~" <br />i~ <br />~ <br /> <br />If any person shall be convicted for being drunk in public three times <br />within one year, upon the third or any subsequent conviction for such <br />offense wi thin the period of one year, such pers on may be punished by <br />imprisonment in jail for not more than six months or by a fine of not <br />more than twenty-five dollars, or by both such fine and imprisonment. <br /> <br />An emergency existing, this ordinance shall be in force from date of its passage. <br /> <br />Council received from City Manager Mathewson a verbal report on the City IS Paving <br /> <br />Division operations for the past SUIlUll3r season, in which report it was noted that <br /> <br />these operations had been most successful. (see summary on page 310) <br /> <br />In its final action of the meeting, Council accepted with many regrets the resignation <br /> <br />of Attorney Claude E.
