L68 TUESDA Y NOm1BER 10. 1953 The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, with l'ayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Circuit Court- Martinsville, Virginia, in accordance with duly-advertised room of the Henry County Courthouse,/notice to the public, on Tuesday, November 10, 1953, at 7:30 o'clock P.M., all members, as follows, being present: Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett; and Councilmen C. P. Craig, D. H. Goode, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Walker. Minutes of the regular Council meeting held October 27, 1953, upon being read, were approved. As its first item of business, as advertised, Council conducted a Public Hearing on a proposal and recommendation recently submitted b,y the Martinsville Junior Chamber of Commerce and endorsed by same twenty-one local organizations that controlled fluoridation of the City's public water supply be instituted, the cost of which was estimated to amount to $3,992.50 for original equipment installation and approximately $900.00 per year for materials. Representing the proponents of this plan was Mr. R. M. Simmons, Jr., President of the Martinsville Junior Chamber of Conunerce, assisted by Dr. D. E. Frederick of the United States Health Department, by Dr. Sam Kent, member of the State of Virginia Board of Health, and by numerous local dentists, physicians, and health officials. Spokesmen for the opponents of the plan were Dr. C. T. Womack, local retired dentist, and Dr. P. E. Ingram, local chiropractor. After some three hours of discussion of the proposal by both the above-mentioned persons and local citizens in the audience, the Council indicated that it would not take any definite action on said proposal during the meeting covered herein by these minutes.
