<br />L68 <br /> <br />TUESDA Y <br /> <br />NOm1BER 10. 1953 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with l'ayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Circuit Court- <br /> <br />Martinsville, Virginia, in accordance with duly-advertised <br />room of the Henry County Courthouse,/notice to the public, on Tuesday, <br /> <br />November 10, 1953, at 7:30 o'clock P.M., all members, as follows, being <br /> <br />present: Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett; and Councilmen C. P. Craig, <br /> <br />D. H. Goode, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />Minutes of the regular Council meeting held October 27, 1953, upon being <br /> <br />read, were approved. <br /> <br />As its first item of business, as advertised, Council conducted a Public <br /> <br />Hearing on a proposal and recommendation recently submitted b,y the <br /> <br />Martinsville Junior Chamber of Commerce and endorsed by same twenty-one <br /> <br />local organizations that controlled fluoridation of the City's public water <br /> <br />supply be instituted, the cost of which was estimated to amount to $3,992.50 <br />for original equipment installation and approximately $900.00 per year for <br /> <br />materials. Representing the proponents of this plan was Mr. R. M. Simmons, Jr., <br /> <br />President of the Martinsville Junior Chamber of Conunerce, assisted by Dr. D. E. <br /> <br />Frederick of the United States Health Department, by Dr. Sam Kent, member of the <br /> <br />State of Virginia Board of Health, and by numerous local dentists, physicians, <br /> <br />and health officials. Spokesmen for the opponents of the plan were Dr. C. T. <br /> <br />Womack, local retired dentist, and Dr. P. E. Ingram, local chiropractor. After <br /> <br />some three hours of discussion of the proposal by both the above-mentioned <br /> <br />persons and local citizens in the audience, the Council indicated that it <br /> <br />would not take any definite action on said proposal during the meeting covered <br /> <br />herein by these minutes. <br /> <br />Pursuant to duly-advertised public notice, Council conducted a Public Hearing <br /> <br />on a request submitted jointly by }1r.
