Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, City <br /> <br />Hall, on Tuesday, October 27, 1953, at 7:30 o'clock P.~., with all members being <br /> <br />present, as follovTs: Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett and Councilmen C. P. Craig, <br /> <br />D. H. Goode, W. T. 'furner, and J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />Minutes of the regular Council meeting he ld October 13, 1953, upon being read, <br /> <br />were approve d. <br /> <br />Pursuant to Council's suggestion of September 22, 1953, City ~~nager Mathewson <br /> <br />reported that he had contacted and conferred with officials of the State Highway <br /> <br />Department as to the possibilities of constructing pedestrian underpasses or <br /> <br />~:g <br />i~ <br />i <br /> <br />tunnels at both ends of the proposed Route 220 Thoroughfare 2.nd that by letter of <br /> <br />October 20., 1953 General James A. Anderson, State Highvvay Commissioner, indicated <br /> <br />the Highway Department's complete disapproval of such un(~rpasses, whereupon <br /> <br />Council requested City Manager 1futhewson to seek General Anderson's assistance <br /> <br />and advise as to providing adequate safety IOOasures in lieu of the pedestrian <br /> <br />underpasses. <br /> <br />In considering the proposed acquisition of a site off Spruce Street Extended for <br /> <br />a new electric sub-station and inasmuch as there could be some legal complications <br /> <br />in a direct purchase of said property from the owner or ovmers, viz., Lanier <br /> <br />Farm, Inc., the Council instructed City Attorney Store to institute ("friendly") <br /> <br />condemnation proceedings against said Lanier Farm, Inc. for the acquisition of <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />said property. <br /> <br />A request from Mr. J. H. McMillan to rezone his property on River Hill Road at the <br /> <br />DuPont Road intersection from "....-2 Residentialll to IIB-l Businessll was referred to <br />
