TW...s DA Y

APRIL ll~, 19.53

example, 5n the Repair Services we find that in five of the other cities the
tax is in excess of 100% of the local tax, ranging on down to a low of 76%
of the Martinsville tax. In the Dry Cleaning and Laundry croup, however, the
highest outside rate is 78% of the local rate and lowest is 26% of the local
rate.

/'-

We cannot believe that the tax structure of this many cities can be so far
wrong in the proportionate taxes charges and feel that this constitutes further
proof that the laundries and dry cleaners of Martinsville are being t2.JCed
under present rates far in excess of their proper proportion of the local
tax load. If you vdll apply the various tax rates to gross receipts in
brackets higher than the $.50,000.00 used in the chart you will find that the
excess tax runs into hundreds of dollars. For eXClJ:lple, a laundr-i and cleaning
plant in Martinsvil1e doing only $200,000.00 gross annual business pays
$1.520.00 and this gross receipts figure is not that of a large firm in the
laundry business particularly, since the margin of profit is very low and
relatively large volume is absolutely necessary for satisfactory operations.

We feel that a maximum rate of 37~ for each $100.00 of gross receipts should
be provided for the dry clearers and laundries.

Yours very truly,

~'"
i~
i

County-City Laundry Corporation
By: F.
