<br />34 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />SEPTEMBER 23, 1952 <br /> <br />The regUlar semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the Cityof Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor R. S. Hodnett pt'esiding, was held in the Council Chamber, <br /> <br />City Hall, on Tuesday, September 23, 1952, at 7:30 o'clock P. M., all members, <br /> <br />as follows, being present: :Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett and Councilmen <br /> <br />C. P. Craig, D. H. Goode, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />:Minutes of the regular Council meeting held September 9, 1952, upon being read, <br /> <br />were approved. <br /> <br />Noting the presence of visitors, Council deferred its regular order of business <br /> <br />to recognize and mar such visitors. Council first recognized the presence of <br /> <br />Miss Mary Margaret Purcell and her student government class of Martinsville High <br /> <br />School who were visiting the Council meeting to observe the pt'ocedure followed by <br /> <br />Council in conduc ting its meeting. Council mext recognized Superintendent of Schools <br /> <br />M. L. Carper who appeared on behalf of the Martinsville City School Board and who <br /> <br />presented to the "Council an application to the State Board of Education for State <br /> <br />School Construction Funds in the arrlount of $70,000.00 to help finance the co!~truction <br /> <br />of the Joseph Martin Elementary School addition and, also, an application to the <br /> <br />State Board of Education's Literary Fund in the amount of $70,000.00 to help finance <br /> <br />the construction of a North Martinsville Elementary School. Upon motion, duly seconded <br /> <br />and unanimously carried, a recorded vote being taken, Council approved both applications <br /> <br />in the forms of the following resolutions: <br /> <br />WHEHEAS, the School Board for the city of Martinsville, on the 23rd day of <br />September, 1952~ presented to this Council an application addressed to <br />the State Board of Education of Virginia for the pur.pose of securing State <br />School Construction Funds in the amount of $70,000.00 for the new school <br />building (or for adding to or improving the present school building) at <br />~artinsville, Virginia. <br />
