Swnons, Chairman, the local Citizens I Smoke Abatement <br /> <br />Committee presented Ut.'l.der date of May 15, 1952 a Progress Report vlhich is <br /> <br />incorporated in and made a pert of t11ese and which is self-explanatory. The <br /> <br />Council received said report with gratitude and, also, at the suggestion of <br /> <br />rh'. Simmons, authorized and empowered Y~yor Walker to add (in an interim <br /> <br />appointment) a representative of the Norfolk & Western Railway Company to the <br /> <br />members:lip of said Committee inasmuch, as Mr. Simmoru:; pointed out in a letter <br /> <br />to M:r. Mathewson, it was not only possible that the Norfolk & Western Railway <br /> <br />might be contributing to the local smoke nuisance pt'oblem through its coal- <br /> <br />burning locomotives but also might lend valuable assistance to me Committee and <br /> <br />communi i{y through the technical knowledGe and experience of some of its personnel. <br /> <br />In a final action of the meeting, Council awarded the annual audit contract, <br /> <br />covering the current fiscal year ending June 30, 1952, to the firm of J.
