376

TUESDAY

NOVE&ffiER 11, 1958

Council acknowledged receipt of a petition dated November 3, 1958 from the Board

of Stewards of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, opposing the proposed locating

of a Virginia AOC store near the intersection of Spruce and Brookdale Streets.

Mr. Jackson C. Dodge, Commanding Officer of the local National Guard unit,

informed Council that there is a good possibility of the Federal and State

governments allocating approximately $220,000.00 tmvards construction of a

local new armory buildiq; to cost appr'oximately $21.1.0,000.00 if the City will

appropriate the difference of some $20,000.00 and, also, provide a suitable site

(of some five or six acres) and provide for maintenance of the new building.

Mr. Dodge stated further that, inasmuch as the building would not be used by

the National Guard except on Mondays and Tuesdays and inasmuch as the building

will be so desigmd and constructed as to accommodate other public usage and

would be a credit to the City, he would hope that the City Council will see its

way to cooperate and assist in this project. Council took the matter under

advisement.

City Manager Hirst called Council's attention to the good traffic safety record

compiled so far during the calendar year 1958, wherein there have been no

traffic fatalities in the City during the year.

Council was adjourned.

2~:bt'-
W.
