<br />~58 <br /> <br />THURSDAY <br /> <br />JANUARY 2, 1958 <br /> <br />Pursuant to notice given in accordance with Section 5, Chapter 2, of the City <br /> <br />Charter, a special meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />was held in th~ Council Chamber, City Hall, on Thursday, January 2, 1958, for the <br /> <br />purpose of conducting such i~s of business as may be brought before the Council, <br /> <br />it being intended that this meeting comtitute the first regular meetirg of <br /> <br />Council for January, 1958 and that the meeting scheduled for January 14, 1958 <br /> <br />constitute the second regular meeting. Members present "!,vere: Mayor and Councilman <br /> <br />John W. Shultz, presiding; Vice-Mayor and Councilman E. E. stone; and Councilmen <br /> <br />C. C. Donavant and J. R. Walker. Councilman B. H. Hill was absent because of <br /> <br />illness. <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as read the minutes of its regular meeting <br />held Decemer 17, 1957. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged receipt of letters dated December 19, 1957 and December 22, <br /> <br /> <br />1957 from the Rev. A. J. Fryhoff, Pastor of Trinity Friends Church, and a copy of a <br /> <br /> <br />resolution from the local Ministerial Association, all advocating the enforcement <br /> <br /> <br />of the "Sunday Blue Laws". Council also received a letter dated December 23, 1957 <br /> <br /> <br />from Mr. R. S. BrO\'m, Sr., who supported a liberal interpretation of these laws. <br /> <br /> <br />In addition, Mr. Dudley Wells, local merchant, appeared before Council and <br /> <br /> <br />requested the strict enforcement of the "Blue Laws". <br /> <br />Mr. George L. Nease placed before Council a map of property owned by him and located <br /> <br /> <br />on the west side of Memorial Boulevard South, which property he intends developing <br /> <br /> <br />in the near future. This map also showed a triangular strip of property owned by <br /> <br /> <br />the City of Martinsville and located between Mr. Nease's property and the street <br /> <br /> <br />right-of-way along Memorial Boulevard.
