1

TUESDAY

JULY 9. 1957

--

In response to a recent request of Council, the City School Board presented

a schedule of its estimated financial requirements for new school building

construction through June 30, 1958 if construction is started in November of

1957. The estimated requirements amounted to a total of $921,000 through

said June 30th, excluding cost of equipment, land, and architectural fees

which might cost an additional $79,000. The School Board pointed out that

,-

this schedule is contingent upon the completion of plans, the approval of same

by the Sta1B Board of Education, and the availability of funds. Members of

Council and the School Board agreed to confer soon with the State Commission

on Local Debt in connection with the marketing of school bonds already

authorized. Meanwhile, the School Board infonned Council that it will probably

require title to a part of the property at Albert Harris School, as purchased

~.~~..
ti~
Ii

in 1950 by the City from Mrs. stuart James Grant, in order to meet ownership

requirements of the State Board of Eaucation.

City Manager Hirst reviewed with Council same eighteen petitions for curb-

and-gutter and/or sidewalk construction (on a shared-cost basis) now on file,

pointing out that the 1957-58 budget provides for the anticipated construction

,-

of 18,000 feet which would not be sufficient to meet but a portion of the

petitions. Representatives of several streets (and petitions)--Beechnut Lane,

Owens Road, and 1,oIindsor Lane--were present and spoke in behalf of their

respective petitions. Council deferred action pending a viewing of the several

streets.

By letter dated July 5, 1957 the state Water Control Board advised that it will

not be necessary for representatives of Council to appear before the Board on

July 16th-17th as previously requested, in view of the June 27th action of Council

calling for a sewer revenue bond election. In connection with the proposed

rAferendum, Council authorized City Attorney Stone to employ the services of

Reed, Hoyt, Taylor, & Washburn, Attorneys, of New York City, for preparation

------_....._,-~.._.~.._---.
