The completion by the Mayor's Ccmmission on Human Values

of their project and the presentation of the final report in January, 1957

has been an outstanding citizen achievement for the City. The searching

study brought forth valuable suggestions for the betterment of the community.

Their recommendations in both government and nongovernment fields, will,

as the Commission stated, take time to accomplish. In the nongovernment

field efforts are already well under way toward developing ideas advanced

by the Commission. In those aspects of the report relating directly to the

city government, some suggestions have already been accomplished. With

respect to the proposed 1957-58 City budget it is noted that certain in-

clusions relate to recommendations of the Commission, as example:

enlarged school facilities (items 1 and 50 as listed in this letter), fire,

police and court accomodations (item 11), addition of police personnel and

automotive equipment (item 12), recreation facilities (item 14), expanded

health services (item 15), and juvenile probation officer (item 42).

".

As previously pointed out, a number of eliminations or re-

ductions in appropriations were made in regard to items considered for

inclusion in the proposed budget. Limitations of available funds has been

the controlling factor. It had been hoped to include funds toward the air-

port to provide incentive for the development of that facility, but repairs

to the hangar and the entrance roadway are only contemplated in the pro-

posed funds. Improvement of water storage and distribution facilities

will, at a later date, me rit funds based on expected recommendations

- 21 -
