Council was advised that the school board tenus of Messrs. J. L. Gregory, Jr. and Henry C. Reed will expire July 1, 1957 and that there presently exists a vacancy on the Planning Commission. An audit report, as prepared by the Auditor of Public Accounts of the Commorn'lealth of Virginia, covering the records and accounts of City Sergeant James L. Carter for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1956, was received and filed. By letter dated April 20, 1957 Mrs. Drury V. Doss and others invited rrembers of ~<~ .\\V~ g il~~ iel'n ,llg "=.= Council and. City Mamger Hirst to attend a community meeting at the Joseph Martin School Auditorium on Apr'il 29, 1957 at 7 :30 P.M. in connection with the forth- coming school bond election. Members of the City School Board and School Superintendent M.. L. Carper presented the School Board's requested budget and an estimate of school account revenues for - the fiscal year beginning July 1, 1957. This budget indicated a net increase in cost to the City of $28,628.74 over the current year's cost to the City. It included funds for the increasing of the teacher salary schedule from its present $3,Ooo-to-$4,200 per year to $3,200-to-$4,400 per year. Council was advised that new fluroscent street lights placed on North Bridge street - have met with enthusiastic approval of the merchants and general public.
