<br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />OCTOBER 9. 1956 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, ~ith Mayor F. V. Woodson presiding, ~as held in the Council Chamber, <br /> <br />City Hall, on Tuesday, October 9, 1956, at 7:30 P.M., all members being <br /> <br />present, viz., Mayor and Councilman F. V. Woodson; Vice-Mayor and Councilman <br /> <br />John W. Shultz; and Councilman B. H. Hill, E. E. Stone, and J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as read the minutes of its regular <br /> <br />meeting held September 25, 1956. <br /> <br />As indicated during its September 25th meeting, Council again considered <br /> <br />the request of local movie exhibitors that the City abolish its amusement <br /> <br />admission tax ordinance, effective immediately. After some discussion, <br /> <br />I~-'" <br />.@~ <br />~~E' <br />Ii <br /> <br />Council denied said request (Messrs. Woodson, Hill, and Walker voting in <br /> <br />the affirmative on the motion that no action be taken to abolish the tax <br /> <br />pending consideration during the preparation of the 1957-58 budget and/or <br /> <br />consideration and action on the Tax Study Advisory Group's report; Councilmen <br /> <br />Shultz and Stone voting in the negative on the motion). <br /> <br />After receiving a report from City Manager Hirst on the question and/or <br /> <br />legality of taxing distributors of trading or premium stamps and/or merchants <br /> <br />handling same, Council "tabled tt this matter indefinitely. <br /> <br />Mrs. H. I. Tuggle, 316 Brown Street, appeared before Council and requested <br /> <br />that the City install at its expense a check valve on the se~erage lateral <br /> <br />serving the Tuggle residence in an effort to avoid a repetition of an incident <br /> <br />of October 4th. Council referred Mrs. Tuggle to City Manager Hirst. <br /> <br />While no official action in connection therewith is required of Council, <br />
