In addition to the omissions, or reductions, already referred to, <br /> <br />several other items neces sarily passed by should receive comment because <br /> <br />from time to time they have evoked particular interest. <br /> <br />1. The airport grows in importance to the city and its trade and commerce. <br /> <br />Beyond the initial property purchase and the hangar the city has not <br /> <br />directly participated financially in the field. Studies have from time to <br /> <br />time been initiated directed toward further development of the facility. <br /> <br />It had been hoped the city could allocate some monies, if only limited, <br /> <br />for such studies to give impetus to investigations as to the field's potential. <br /> <br />2. For some years funds have been provided for a probation officer and in <br /> <br />the current year (1958-59) the money was designated for a study of an <br /> <br />area juvenile detention home. Neither study.f( has unfortunately material- <br /> <br />ized. The advisability of pursuing one or both projects through a study <br /> <br />phas e continues with no abatement of need. <br /> <br />3. To improve appearance of the narrow downtown streets and to improve <br /> <br />electrical facilities, it was contemplated starting a program of converting <br /> <br />the downtown electrical wiring system to single strand aerial cable. This <br /> <br />for the future is desirable. <br /> <br />4. To improve the appearance and safety of the city's primary through <br /> <br />thoroughfare, Memorial Boulevard, hope was to include funds to <br />- 31 - <br />
