146

THURSDAY

SEPTEMBER 2. 1965

Among interested persons present at this meeting and speaking to the Council

were:

1. Stephen D. Martin, Jr., Attorney at Law, on behalf of Booth

Broadcasting Corporation, which firm has expressed itself

heretofore as being interested in obtaining a CATV franchise in

Martinsville; with Mr. Martin informing Council that no reply of

position or statement has been received from his client with

reference to current CATV franchise proposals presented to

Council and with reference to the policy matters being subject of

this meeting;

2. Mr. C. Harry Anglin, on behalf of his interest in obtaining a

local CATV franchise;

3. Mr. Curtis Jones and Mr. William Lawless, on behalf of themselves

and the Virginia Electronic Association, reiterating their position

and recommendations previously presented, as well as explaining the

methods by which--without cost to the public and without the

installation of a CATV system--better television reception, if

determined as being needed (for which studies are underway), will

be made available to the Martinsville area; and

4. Mr. Lee Gilbert, Manager of Radio Station WMVA, with the station's

counsel, Mr. Jackson L. Kiser, Attorney at Law, both primarily as

observers at this meeting.

At the conclusion of the "public hearing" phase of the meeting, Council reviewed

the policy questions posed in City Manager Hirst's memorandum of August 23, 1965,

and directed City Attorney Cubine to reflect Council's decisions and conclusions

thereon--as expressed during the second phase of the meeting--in the draft of

the proposed CATV franchise.

Council was adjourned.

l

W. H.

n, Clerk of Council
