-~ ~

TUESDAY

AUGUST 12, 1969

.-

In response to inquiry from Mr. Joe Pritchett, of 1203 Maxine Road, concerning

requested street improvements in the Maxine Road-Pine Hall-Yorkshire Street area,

Council expressed its awareness of the problems involved as well as of the need

for improvements, inasmuch as it recently viewed the area, indicating that one

parcel of property will have to be acquired in order that some of the existing

conditions might be improved.

Mr. Charles M. Bradley, local attorney, and Mr. Bruce H. Caricofe, who have been

instrumental in recently organizing the local chapter of the Society for the

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (i.e., SPCA) , appeared before Council and out-

lined some of the activities of the local chapter as well as the assistance it

can be directly to the City's operation of its dog pound.. These representatives,

further, indicated that the chapter can place with citizens many of the dogs

impounded by the Dog Warden; however, the chapter, being a non-profit organization,

is not in a position to pay the impounding fee required under present regulations

for release to the chapter of dogs and, for the service the chapter can be in

this area, requested the Council to waive the fee usually imposed. These

representatives also requested that the Dog Warden be authorized to withhold

extermination of dogs impounded, even though no one claims such dogs, until the

request of the SPCA can be considered and acted upon. Meanwhile, Council asked

City Attorney Cubine to review the City's dog ordinance and render an opinion as

to what might be involved--whether by amendments or otherwise--to honor the chapter's

request. In addition, these representatives informed Council that they are hopeful

of establishing a permanent animal shelter for stray animals and, towards this end,

...-

solicited Council's consideration of contributing financial aid.

Council was adjourned.

W.

..,. ,-......~

, Clerk of Council
